My story

Dark city

Min Bae 2014. 11. 7. 07:59

Already more than a month has passed since I came here. Many things happened, but I think everything is all right except for one thing that all things here are finished extremely early. Every shop closes mostly at around 5 pm unless they're pubs, restaurants or Tesco, even the sun seeming to join by completely disappearing at the latest by 4 :30pm just leaving its red in a few clouds.

I initially thought I could take photos fairly often and there were as many scenes I wanted to save in my album as I imagined. When I took a few of them, yet, the real brightness was much lower than I thought would be, so that the feeling they present is quite different one than I expected from what were just viewed in my eyes. I guess my eyes adapted most successfully to this weak sunlight here than other parts of my body, especially the top, which is yet struggling with its surroundings and didn't recognise the difference in brightness of the sun light from what it was used to.

The above picture shows the school building where I study, St Katharine's Lodge. It is used for study in modern history and Scottish history. There is another building where I go to frequently, St Johns House, which is mainly used for study in medieval history.

The below one is taken in front of St Katharine's Lodge on a different day, when the sky was clearer so that the photo was able to show the horizontal line of the sea. Basically, the town is located along the sea and it's quite easy to go to the beach, but just because it is so this does not mean that I can see the sea any time I want to. Even within the library, the side where the sea is seen through its windows is kind of at a premium and its seats are more popular with students than the other sides. Students behave much like those tourists who come to this town for their summer night on the beach.

There is a main library just behind that modern history building, but PhD students who regard it too secular usually go to another library, Martyrs Kirk library, which is shown below. It is definitely a duller place than the main library and there is no chance to see the sea. once I enter there, automatically I have to join the arrays of students who are sitting or sleeping seriously.

This is taken in front of the door to the room in the library.

On the opposite side there is a chapel which is one of the main buildings of the university, called St Salvator's Chapel. This is the picture of the chapel. It is quite big so it was not easy to take it all in one frame with my old iPhone. It is one of the buildings that look darkest in the university whose history is over 600 years. In this small town generally the darker buildings mean older ones. The chapel in this photo too seems to have swallowed a person walking along it just leaving his umbrella.

When I came out of a building in the town to go home one day, the clouds and sky were very beautiful so I took the picture. I mistakenly thought it was just late afternoon so the photo would be much brighter than is seen below only to prove that it was delusion. As a result, another dark photo of this one simply made where I am look like Gotham city in contrast to the far distant country whose sky looks pink and warm.

Sometimes I don't go to St Andrews and just stay in Dundee. These pictures are what I took around the university of Dundee. Particularly the first one shows the sea that is shining brightly on its surface. Again I thought it would be much brighter than it shows here because it was at noon when taking it and the weather was quite fine. The second one is taken on a street near the university. Even I am confused what is the sky and what is the cloud. Maybe it is the moon given the darkness of the street.

The last picture of today is what I took at Dundee bus station because of an impressive ad poster. I happened to see it on a bus, which showed probably Korean people if they were not hired purposely by Scottish people.
